Within Falkland House School Perth, we have one large residential house with four wings for young people – Kinnoull, Scone, Letham and Craigie. Our residential house has a large communal area open to all with sofas, bean bags, chairs, a pool table, a TV, books and board games to play. Each wing of six bedrooms has its own smaller lounge which is appropriately decorated and has its own sofas and TVs. There are two kitchens and dining spaces available, as well as two laundry rooms.
We promote a large emphasis on empowering our young people to move towards independence with the right support and guidance along the way. These spaces are all calming and comfortable, creating a homely and relaxing environment for all residents who are encouraged to share their inputs for how they want the home to look and feel.
Falkland House School Perth offers excellent access to the outdoors. Being at the foot of Kinnoull Hill and near the banks of the River Tay, outdoor activities such as trail walking, cycling and paddle sports – among others – are readily available.
The city centre – just a 10-minute walk away – provides safe and accessible integration to the wider community and all that it can offer. While we have our own gym facility on site, we encourage our young people to, when ready, independently venture into the town to access the local health and wellbeing facilities like the swimming pool. This readily available and supported access to healthy pursuits has such a positive impact on the mental well-being, self-esteem and independence of our young people.
Perth has no shortage of other activities available to our young people, with the Ballroom Pool and Snooker Hall being a favourite among our residents who have fine-tuned their skills within the School House. There is also an abundance of cafés and restaurants locally, and a cinema, all within a short distance of our campus.
There are several local cafés and shops that our young people have found supported work experience in, thanks to our designated Throughcare and Engagement Officer, preparing them for life after school. Vocational SQA qualifications can be tied to their work experiences which will bolster their college, university, and employment applications when the time for a positive transition comes.
